After an initial field survey conducted in the four target locations – two neighbourhoods (Soubalo and Aïnoumady) and two villages (Gaol and Ngeyenne Taiba) – the team in charge of spatial analysis began a reconnaissance mission of the habitats. The first mission enabled thermal images to be captured using a drone flying overhead, measuring the emissivity of roofs based on the construction material.
The habitat recognition mission has several purposes:
On the one hand, identify suitable households in each locality in which to install thermal sensors. As a reminder, the aim is to measure temperatures within households by installing thermal sensors in 1,200 households (i.e. 300 per locality).
On the other hand, collect key information from families using a questionnaire on:
Housing characteristics: in particular the type of roof (tarpaulin, zinc, cement, straw) and the materials used to construct the dwelling (cement, banco), and whether or not there are trees in the yard providing shade.
The geographical coordinates of each dwelling
The presence of pregnant women or women of childbearing age in the dwelling in order to establish links between the temperatures that will be collected and maternal and child health
Finally, questions about the level of acceptability of the future installation of thermal sensors
This reconnaissance phase is essential to the smooth running of the project, especially since data on habitat characteristics can be linked to thermal images collected by drones.
