From 8 to 12 December, geographers from the Extram Sen team conducted a field survey in four target areas in the Matam region – two urban (Matam and Ourossogui) and two rural (Gaol and Ngueyenne Taiba). The aim of this mission was to prepare for the future installation of thermal sensors in 1,200 households (300 per target area) as part of an innovative system for monitoring indoor temperatures.

The team also tested flying a thermal drone over the four selected areas to map the different types of dwellings (straw, adobe, cement, zinc, tiles, tarpaulin). The aim is to analyse the heat emitted by these materials based on the principle of thermal emissivity, i.e. the ability of a surface to absorb and emit radiated energy, in order to use the thermal camera to determine which types of roofs are the hottest.

The support and cooperation of local communities played a crucial role in the smooth running of the survey. A dialogue was established with local stakeholders, particularly village and neighbourhood leaders. These discussions provided an opportunity to explain the objectives and benefits of installing thermal sensors.
